Nehemiah 4:14

"And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses."

Introduction

Welcome to Day 22 of praying for our Nation. Today we read where Nehemiah stirs the hearts of the Israelites: “Do not be afraid.” Remember the Lord!

Insight

In the book of Nehemiah, we find a profound moment of encouragement that resonates deeply with our lives today. Nehemiah 4:14 states, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is Great and Awesome, and fights for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your Fathers, wives, and your homes.” This powerful reminder speaks to the heart of our fears and anxieties, urging us to look beyond our immediate struggles and to trust in the greatness of God.

Nehemiah and the Israelites are facing overwhelming opposition as they work to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Their task is monumental, and the threats from surrounding enemies loom large. Yet, Nehemiah calls the people to remember the Lord. He reminds them of God’s greatness and His awesome power, encouraging them not to succumb to fear.

In our own lives, we can relate to the feelings of fear and uncertainty. Whether we are facing personal challenges, family issues, or societal pressures, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The enemies we face may not be physical threats but can manifest as doubt, anxiety, or despair. During these times, Remember the Lord!

When Nehemiah implores the Israelites to remember, he prompts them to reflect on their history. God had been with their ancestors, delivering them from slavery, parting the Red Sea, and providing for them in the wilderness. Each of these acts demonstrated His incredible power and faithfulness. As we recall God’s past faithfulness in our lives, we gain the strength to face our present challenges.

Nehemiah also emphasizes fighting for our families—“for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” This call to action is significant. It reminds us that our struggles also affect our loved ones. As we stand firm in our faith, we are not only fighting for ourselves but also for those we care about. Our courage can inspire and strengthen our families, leading them to trust in God’s provision and protection.

Moreover, the phrase “God is great and awesome” serves as a powerful declaration. In a world filled with noise and distractions, we must fix our eyes on the truth of who God is. He is greater than any problem we face. When we acknowledge His power, fear begins to dissipate. We have a mighty God fighting on our behalf.
